Swabbing uses a swab cup run on a sand line to lift fluid out of the wellbore. Removing that column of fluid lowers the hydrostatic pressure holding back the formation, which lets the well flow again. It is standard practice on mature and marginal wells, after workovers, and for recovering load fluid following stimulation.
Fishing is the recovery of anything stuck, parted, or dropped in a wellbore — tubing, rods, wireline, packers, plugs, or dropped tools. It uses specialised tools such as overshots to grip the fish and hydraulic jars to work it free. The objective is to get the well back into service without having to sidetrack or abandon it.
