A frac stack is the assembly of valves and spools installed above the wellhead to control pressure during hydraulic fracturing. It isolates the wellhead from frac pressures, gives the crew a way to shut the well in, and provides the connection point for the treating iron. Because it sits between frac pressure and the well, its condition and its test record matter more than almost any other equipment on location.

A frac valve is a heavy-duty gate valve rated for frac pressures and abrasive proppant-laden fluid. It is what allows the crew to open and close flow to the well during a stage. Frac valves wear — seats and seals take a beating from proppant — which is why repair, rebuild, and pressure verification are routine rather than exceptional.

A zipper manifold routes frac fluid from the pumps to multiple wells on a pad, letting the crew frac one well while another is being wireline-dressed. It is what makes zipper fracturing possible, and it eliminates the need to rig down and move between wells between stages. Because it carries full treating pressure across several connections, its valves and iron need the same inspection discipline as the frac stack itself.
